New Internet Names Coming.
(19 January 2001, revised 1 May 2001, 8 Sept. 2001) In addition to the familiar ".com", ".org" and ".net" designations for Internet domain names ("top level domain names"), the Internet Commission for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved 7 new designations:
.aero (for the aerospace industry)
.coop (for cooperatives)
.museum (for museums)
.pro (for physicians, lawyers, accountants, will expand to other professionals later)
.biz (for anyone)
.info (for anyone)
.name (for anyone)
The names would go:
www.(name).biz
www.(name).info
www.(firstname).(lastname).name
www.(name).med.pro
www.(name).law.pro
www.(name).cpa.pro
This might be of interest to you, if you missed out on the opportunity to reserve a “.com”, “.org”, or “.net” name for yourself or your business, in the early days of the Internet. Currently, there are an estimated 15 million “.com” names in use worldwide, up from 6 million ".com" names in use as of 1999. Click here to learn how to register a .com, .net, or .org name.
The registrations for .biz and .info will be available September, 2001. Registration for .name should be available in December, 2001. Protections of some sort are expected to be set up for holders of trademarked names (so don’t think of taking another party's trademark for your domain name, unless you like defending against lawsuits).
