Will Indiana License Soil Scientists?
(19 January 2001, updated 17 March 2001, 1 May 2001) Following a trend that has been embraced by a number of states , the Governor is considering a proposal to license professional soil scientists. The bill, SB (Senate Bill) 0093, was introduced by Senator Gregory D. Server (R-Evansville), has passed both houses of the Indiana Legislature. Read the text of the bill. Soil scientists, under the proposed legislation, will be licensed to practice the identification, classification, evaluation, and explanation of soils. Indiana already has license requirements for professional geologists at Indiana Code 25-17.6 (read the statute), who can practice the investigation, classification, location, and analysis of "the rocks and other materials that compose the earth's crust". The proposed bill will not apply to licensed professional geologists, who apply soil science to the practice of geology.
